Instructions for Installation of your Hawkeye Backup
Safety Mirror ™
Please read all directions carefully before installing the mirror!
Finding the correct location to install the Hawkeye Backup Safety Mirror ™ There are 4 possible places for positioning the Hawkeye. You must decide which one is most appropriate for your vehicle. Position 1
The first option is at the highest point of the rear windshield (at the top) in the middle of the windshield. However many models vehicles have a brake light inside the window in this place in which case the Hawkeye will be obscured by the light and vice versa. If this is so with your vehicle, you should follow option 2. (See below). Also for option 1 please be advised that on most model vehicles the rear windshield wiper will extend almost to the top of the middle of the windshield and the Hawkeye placed here will interfere with the blade’s movement. On many models with large rear windows it is possible to replace the rear windshield wiper blade with a shorter one and then still put the Hawkeye in the top center position avoiding interference with the sweep of the wiper blade. This can be done quite simply at most gas stations or a new blade can be purchased at an auto parts store. (Figure 1). On models with smaller windows and already short wiper blades this will not be acceptable in which case please follow option 2.
Position 2
The second option for placement of the Hawkeye is at or near the top of the rear windshield, off center (away from the middle) on either the right or left side, and outside the circumference of the sweep of the wiper blade. This placement avoids any interference with a central brake light or the movement of the wiper blade. The mirror can then be adjusted to give a full view of the rear blind spot to approximately 10 feet behind the vehicle. (Figure 2) If the mirror is placed on the passenger side (A), it will be easier for the driver to look at directly, but if it is necessary to place the mirror on the left side (B), the driver can still see the mirror conveniently through his own rear view mirror.
Position 3
Position 3 is to be used for cargo vans, passenger vans, and some SUV’s which have a double rear door with windows. For best results, position the mirror at the top middle of the window of the right rear door (passenger side). See Figure 3
Position 4
Position 4 is used when the rear window slopes back rather than being vertical (straight up and down). The best position for the mirror in this case is approximately half way up on the glass outside the sweep of the wiper blade on the passenger side.(Figure 4 & 5)
Once the mirror is affixed properly to the window it will not fall off and will be difficult to pry off intentionally so please be certain where you want to attach the mirror before you proceed to affix it to the glass! WARNING! If for any reason you need to remove the mirror do not reattach it reusing the original adhesive tape as the bond will no longer be reliable! You can write to us and send us a $5 check and we will send you a new adhesive tape. Instructions for Installation: Please Note: the bonding process between the mirror assembly and the windshield should be done only at temperatures above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is necessary to bond the Hawkeye at a lower temperature we recommend warming the window with the rear defroster or electric hairdryer before affixing the mirror. 1- First determine where you wish to place the mirror. (See guidelines above for mirror placement) 2- Clean the area where you intend to attach the Hawkeye with the solvent and cloth swab in the plastic packet provided to remove dirt, dust, oil, and moisture. 3- Peel the red tape from the base of the Hawkeye exposing the white sticky surface of the tape. 4- Press the base firmly against the glass and hold for 10 seconds. 5- Adjust angle of mirror to allow for maximum viewing- from the rear bumper to approximately 10 Ft. behind the vehicle. Tighten the 3 screws surrounding the ball joint to secure the mirror angle position. 6- Do not apply force to the mirror for 24 hours. SPARE TIRE ON BACK Please note! In general the Hawkeye will not work well on vehicles having a tire mounted on the back. In most cases the tire will obstruct the view of the mirror and the results will not be satisfactory. Mechanical Car Wash When taking your vehicle through a mechanical car wash, simply bend the mirror assembly down at the pivot joint so that it is flat against the window. After wash, lift up at pivot joint to easily restore original position. Safety Research and Mktg. issues a one-year warrantee against any manufacturing defects in the Hawkeye Backup Safety Mirror. The Hawkeye should provide many years of reliable service as long as the installation directions are carefully followed. |
